Course Objectives
 
After the completion upon this programme, participants would be able to:

  1. acquire creative problem solving skills;

  2. discover leadership potential;

  3. be more empathetic to self and others;

  4. establish social responsibility

 

Course Description

Through providing a series of multiple creative activities and hands on experience (farm visit, interviews, panel discussion), students can have the space to recognize own talents and potentials, appreciate self and peers’ effort and ideas, make connections with what and how they can make a difference in the society despite of young age. The learning process and product dissemination can increase students’ social responsibility and enhance creative problem solving abilities that students can better understand and equip themselves for future challenges.

 

Working in teams allow students learn how to plan, organize a social project which their leadership potential can be developed. In an authentic, daily life setting, students can become more engaged and open-minded enough to test and apply their learning. When learning and living are not segregated, the activities can touch students’ heart more deeply and become softly integrated into students’ whole person development. Apart from carrying out a social change project, students will become more caring and develop a sense of social responsibility. Research skills will be taught and it is expected that more creative ideas will be discovered and students are able to turn those ideas into feasible outcomes.

 

Course Highlights

  1. explore, investigate and creatively solve real life issues in the area of sustainable development

  2. engage in interactive activities (e.g. farm / roof garden visit, interview with local farmers, discussion with stakeholders)

  3. enhance critical thinking and social responsibility

  4. acquire basic qualitative research skills

  5. Project Presentation: A 2-minute video will be made in each group and then posted online to promote green, healthy living. Students are encouraged to keep participating in sustainable development campaigns, e.g., bring the video back to share with relatives, teachers and friends.

 

 

Target Participants / Prerequisite

  • Primary 4-6 students should have a high level of creativity and problem solving skills.

 

 

Course Instructor

 

Ms. Jo NG

Ms. Jo NG is a developmental consultant, a teacher and a registered social worker. She received a master's degree in Special Education with Gifted Education Concentration from the University of British Columbia. She has been working in local and international schools. She also worked at the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education as a professional development officer in the Teacher Professional Development Division for 3 years.

 

Currently Jo provides consultation service related to special educational needs in local primary schools. She has also been an instructor in the Centre for Advancement in Inclusive and Special Education (CAISE) at the University of Hong Kong since 2015, and served as the Academic Advisor of Hong Kong Gifted Education Teachers’ Association.

 

Jo is keen to support the growth and well-being of children, adolescents, parents and educators through providing case consultation, developmental groups and professional development training. She has been practicing mindfulness under the tradition of Plum Village since 2013 and completed the one-year Mindfulness Teachers Training Program by The Mindfulness Academy in 2015. She has initiated a quarterly Day of Mindfulness for Children with Plum Village monastics and HKU CAISE since March 2016.

 

Her aspiration is to cultivate joy and happiness in children, family, schools and the society.
