Digital Composing for Kids

Course ​Objectives

This course aims to develop students’ imagination and musical creativity with the application of IT. Students will be grouped in pairs and each group will explore music on the computers and the internet. High level of thinking skills, including creative thinking skills, critical thinking skills, and synthesis skills will be employed throughout the whole learning process. At the end of the course, each group will complete a piece of music, which will be used as the background music of a given story. The students will present their works in class.

Course Outline
Stage 1:
Motivation and Imitation – During this stage, students will be motivated to make music composition through the application of IT.
Stage 2:
Exploring and Structuring – Students will explore music and organize their musical ideas in the virtual environment created by computers.
Stage 3:
Product Realization and Performing – Students will finalize their musical piece and perform it.
Stage 4:
Feedback – Students will evaluate their music composition.


Target Participants / Prerequisite

ABRSM Grade 3 or above (or equivalent)


Course Tutor

TANG Pan-hang
Dr. Tang is an experienced music educator, composer and researcher. He is a member of the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild (HKCG), the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH), the International Society of Music Education (ISME) and a member of various associations of music and gifted education.
